Pathway to Australian Permanent Residency

Commercial cookery remains one of the most consistent pathways to Australian Permanent Residency for Filipino students. Here’s what the journey generally looks like:

Step 1 — Study (2 years)

Complete Certificate III + IV + Diploma package on a Student Visa (Subclass 500). Work up to 48 hours per fortnight during semester, unlimited during breaks.

Step 2 — Graduate Work Visa (Subclass 485)

Graduating with a CRICOS-registered qualification in Australia enables eligible graduates to apply for and live and work; after completing their studies in Australia, by obtaining a Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485 — Graduate Work stream). Duration depends on qualification level.

Step 3 — Skilled Migration

Chef (ANZSCO 351311) is listed on Australia’s Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) — one of the powerful PR-leading occupation lists, in Australia.

This opens pathways to:

  • Subclass 189 — Skilled Independent (points-tested, no sponsorship needed)
  • Subclass 190 — Skilled Nominated (state government sponsorship)
  • Subclass 491 — Skilled Work Regional (regional sponsorship, leads to Subclass 191 PR)
  • Subclass 482 — Skills in Demand Visa (employer-sponsored, up to 4 years)
  • Subclass 186 — Employer Nomination Scheme (direct to PR)

Important for Filipinos: The occupation of Chef (351311) is listed on the MLTSSL and qualifies for PR under the Medium-Term stream of the 482 visa. Cook (351411) would qualify through the Short-Term stream which provides no direct PR pathway. First, qualification level matters a lot!

Regional Study Advantage: Studying cookery in a country-wide area of Australia could gain you additional migration points and access to the Subclass 491 nation-wide visa — which after 3 years will result in everlasting Subclass 191 residency.
